On Sunday, October 2, Frances June (Gray) Selby, loving wife and mother, passed peacefully from this life at the age of 88.
June was born on June 10, 1934, in the town of Dixie Springs, Alabama, to James F. Gray and Ivor Pernie (Woods) Gray and spent most of her early years on the family’s farm in Oakman, Alabama. In 1952, after graduating from Oakman High, she moved to Arlington, Virginia, where she began working for the Department of Defense and where she met her husband of 68 years,
Frederick Monroe Selby. They were married in February 1954. Throughout her work years, she held administrative positions in the US government, including with the Naval Communications Center in Cheltenham, MD, and the US Census Bureau. She and Fred also raised three sons who survive her, James Frederick, Gary Steven, and Donald Coles.
June also made time for gardening, reading, sewing and crafts, playing her piano, and singing in her rich, alto voice. In her later years, she relished time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and traveling the country with Fred and, for over twenty years, camping and wintering in Florida. Most of all, she was a woman of deep faith, serving as a lifelong, faithful
member of the Church of Christ.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Fred, by her three sons and their wives, by eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, numerous other nieces and nephews, and by a host
of those whose lives she blessed.
Funeral services will be held at the Raymond Funeral Home in LaPlata, MD, with internment at the Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
