Sarah Jane Grant

Clarksville

Clarksville TN - Sarah Jane Grant, 85, passed away peacefully at home with family on July 31, 2025. Sarah Jane was born on June 10, 1940 in Clarksville, TN to the late Mac and Sarah Lisenbee as the second of three children. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who cherished time with family.

She grew up in Clarksville, TN and is an alum of Clarksville High School, graduating in 1957. She married Dale Grant on July 25, 1958 and quickly put her writing skills to good use writing to him daily during his basic training for the United States Air Force. They left Clarksville in the summer of 1959 to PCS to Glasgow Air Force Base in Montana. After their daughter was born in 1960, they made their way back to Clarksville in 1962 and two more sons completed their family. She enjoyed playing the piano and her children remember singing and performing in the family room. She frequently played many of her favorite hymns "Because He Lives", "Softly and Tenderly" and "Breathe on Me". In addition to being a nurturing homemaker, she worked as an attendance secretary at Northwest High School (much to the embarrassment of her children) and also as a substitute calling clerk for CMCSS which allowed her to be the caregiver for her grandchildren as they arrived into the world.

Sarah Jane was dubbed "Mammy" by her grandchildren and the nickname became her identity. She was an avid and competitive Scrabble player with anyone who would challenge her to a game, never missed an opportunity to send a birthday card, or share a blonde joke. After her sister-in-law gifted her with an original painting of raccoons, developed an enthusiasm for their cuteness and continued to include them in her home decor over the years as well as collecting children's story books about raccoons that she would share with her grandchildren.

She leaves behind her husband of 67 years, Dale Grant; sister Molly Cook; children Debbie Winters (Wade) and Darrell Grant (Renee); grandchildren Melissa Werner (Kelly), Evan Winters (Lauren), Macie Grant, Jesse McMahon, Jeremiah Grant, Dylan Grant and great-grandchildren Emma, Grant, Everett, Lilly and Noah. She is preceded in death by her parents; Bill Kershner (brother) and Mike Grant (son).

The family will receive visitors from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM and a chapel service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at Sykes Funeral Home in Clarksville, TN. Graveside to follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pat Summit Foundation for Alzheimer's at https://patsummitt.org/.
