James "Jimmy" Maddox

April 4, 1942 — March 27, 2022

James Douglas Maddox, age 79, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2022, in Clarksville, Tennessee.

A reception celebrating Jimmy’s life will be held with family and friends at the Clarksville Country Club on Saturday, April 2, 2022 from 2:00-4:00 pm. Please join us in remembering him with stories to share.

Jimmy was born on April 4, 1942, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to the late John and Ora Maddox, and also preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Maddox.  He was a 1960 graduate of Clarksville High School, attended Austin Peay State University, and graduated from the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 1964 with a degree in Business.

Jimmy was a talented athlete, playing sports of all kinds to include baseball, basketball, tennis, and golf. He was so proud of the tennis records he held in doubles during his years at Austin Peay State University. As an avid golfer for much of his life, he played all over the country with great friends, placed in many tournaments, and was even lucky enough to hit two holes-in-one! Jimmy was well-known in his community because of his entrepreneurship as a local businessman. He worked for Maddox Tire Company, Queen City Shopper, and co-owned Pal’s Package Store with his father and late brother. He happily retired in 2006 to enjoy more time with his beloved family. Jimmy’s blood ran orange because of his love for his alma mater, the University of Tennessee. Rocky Top will always be home sweet home to him! Many will remember Jimmy as a long-winded story and joke teller. Some of his favorites were “cleaning his glass eye” trick, “Watch for Falling Rock”, and the infamous “pulling your leg” joke. If you know, you know. His stories were captivating, he held an audience like no other, never met a stranger, and knew how to make a good time even better. Jimmy was also a man of faith and loved the Lord. Jimmy was best known as a gentle family man. He was such a generous and fun Daddy, friend, uncle, neighbor, and overall beautiful human.

Survivors include his daughters April (Doug) Ford, Amber (Horace) Heggie, and Amanda Maddox, grandchildren Ethan Ford, Madi Ford, Kate Heggie, and Izzy Heggie, and his loving care-takers, Kathy Maddox Maness, and Roger Maness, known as his “husband-in-law”. Also left to cherish his memory are nephews and nieces, Dan Maddox, Lisa Kay Maddox Vinson, Christopher Binkley, and Corrie Binkley Barger. Lastly, Jimmy is survived by Jimmy Coleman, his constant companion and best friend for over 70 years.

Many heartfelt thanks to Spring Meadows Healthcare Center and AseraCare Hospice Care for their extraordinary support, compassionate care, and limitless love over the last several years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
